Dunlop Trailmax Raid Review
How the Dunlop Trailmax Raid performs across all rating categories is detailed in the following sections of our comprehensive Dunlop Trailmax Raid test.
Grip on Dry Roads
Dry‑road grip is excellent. The special compound and tread design provide high traction and a very secure feel. Both in straight‑line riding and in corners, the tire delivers impressive performance and precise handling. On the road, the Trailmax Raid feels surprisingly sporty – Dunlop clearly focused on performance.
Grip on Wet Roads
The Trailmax Raid also performs well in wet conditions. The tread design evacuates water effectively, reducing aquaplaning risk. Wet‑road grip is reliable and confidence‑inspiring.
In wet off‑road terrain, however, the tire eventually reaches its limits. While it handles damp ground and light mud surprisingly well, it remains a 50/50 tire. Even so, the Trailmax Raid is currently among the best dual‑purpose tires on the market.
Braking Characteristics
Braking performance is commendable. The tire allows smooth, controlled braking on both dry and wet roads. Even during hard braking, the tire responds predictably and securely. Grip levels are high thanks to the performance‑oriented compound. For a knobby‑style tire, braking stability is absolutely acceptable.
Riding Comfort
Riding comfort is high. The Trailmax Raid absorbs bumps and road imperfections well, contributing to a pleasant riding experience. Even on long tours, the tire keeps rider fatigue low. Despite its relatively aggressive tread blocks, the tire can be ridden with little effort.
At around 70–80 km/h, a slight rolling noise is noticeable – typical for more aggressive adventure tires.
Tire Wear
Tire wear is solid. The tread wears evenly, contributing to a longer lifespan – especially beneficial for long‑distance touring riders. However, Dunlop explicitly states that the compound is tuned for strong road performance, meaning it is relatively soft. This naturally reduces mileage.
Mileage
Mileage is appropriate for a sporty 50/50 tire. The Trailmax Raid maintains its performance over a surprisingly long distance without significant loss of grip or handling. Depending on riding style, terrain, and motorcycle, final mileage is typically 4,500–7,000 km.
Riding Stability / Cornering Stability
Stability is excellent. The tire tracks reliably both in straight lines and in corners. Cornering stability is impressive, offering a secure and precise riding feel. The tire never “falls” into corners, which enhances confidence. Off‑road, the Trailmax Raid provides strong lateral grip — a major advantage on gravel.
Agility / Turn‑in Behavior
The Trailmax Raid is surprisingly agile and responds quickly to steering input. Turn‑in is direct and precise, giving the rider excellent control. For a true adventure tire, the agility and steering precision are remarkable.
Uprighting Tendency
The Trailmax Raid shows good balance when braking at lean. Unwanted upright tendencies are well controlled, ensuring safe and predictable handling. However, the tire does exhibit a noticeable amount of uprighting tendency – typical for this category.
Tire Pressure
The recommended tire pressures should follow Dunlop’s specifications. Correct pressure is crucial for optimal performance and longevity. Especially off‑road, tire pressure plays a major role. During our test, we used the manufacturer’s recommended pressures and saw no need to adjust them.
Off‑Road Performance
The Dunlop Trailmax Raid also impresses off‑road. Thanks to its special tread and robust construction, it handles a wide range of terrain with ease.
- Traction: Excellent grip on gravel, sand, and loose surfaces.
- Stability: High stability and control during off‑road maneuvers.
- Durability: Reinforced sidewalls protect against rocks, roots, and impacts.
- Self‑cleaning: The tread sheds mud and dirt effectively, maintaining traction.
- Agility: Despite its stability, the tire remains agile on technical trails.
- Versatility: Ideal for riders who split their time between road and off‑road.
Dunlop Trailmax Raid Experiences
The Dunlop Trailmax Raid is an outstanding all‑round adventure tire with excellent performance on both dry and wet roads. With strong braking characteristics, high stability, good mileage, and comfortable ride quality, it is a great choice for touring riders who value versatility. Its agile turn‑in and solid cornering performance also make it appealing for sporty adventure riders.
Off‑road, the Trailmax Raid continues to impress. Despite its strong road performance, it handles off‑road terrain extremely well. In our view, the new Trailmax Raid is currently the benchmark in the adventure segment — especially for riders who tackle a lot of off‑road sections. The tire also carries an M+S marking, allowing use below the standard speed index.
